Seminar abstract

Cognitive Computing and Cognitive Robots

Huajin Tang
Dr.
Research Scientist and Group Leader of Cognitive Computing, Institute of Infocomm, Singapore

Abstract: Cognitive computing is a new frontier that span across computational neurosience, computer science and electronic engineering, etc. It will provide new techniques and solutions for cognitive science, artificial intelligence and robotics. One of the important topics in the study of robotic cognition is to enable the robot to perceive, plan and react to situations in a real-world environment. Based on cognitive computing, we presented a brain-like computational model which integrates these functions together to achieve a cognitive behavior. The model incorporates two brain-like neural components: entorhinal cortex (EC) and Hippocampus. It combines cognitive map ability in EC and episodic memory ability in Hippocampus together to enable a more versatile cognitive behavior for the robot. With the cognitive map and episodic memory properties, the system is able to adapt to different environment, to learn and execute multiple tasks.

Bio: Tang Huajin received the B.Eng. degree from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, the M.Eng. degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the National University of Singapore, Singapore, in 1998, 2001, and 2005, respectively. He was a System Engineer with STMicroelectronics, Singapore, from 2004 to 2006. From 2006 to 2008, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow with Queensland Brain Institute, University of Queensland, Australia. He is currently a Research Scientist and Lead of the Group Leader of Cognitive Computing at the Institute for Infocomm Research, Singapore. He has published one monograph (Springer-Verlag,2007) and about thirty international journal papers. His current research interests include neural computation, cognitive computing, and neuro-cognitive robots. He is now the Principal Investigator for the S$3.5 mil project Artificial Cognitive Memory funded by A*STAR, and also the PI for several international collaboration projects with RIKEN, Japan and KAIST, Korea. He serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Trans. on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, and Chair of the Education-Multimedia Subcommittee of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society.
